LOCHSIDE SAILING CLUB

SUMMER NEWSLETTER 1993

Now that the weather seems to have finallv turned around the Committee look forward to seeing as many of you on Sundays and Tuesday evenings.

CLUB WEEKENDS

This year's first weekend away, 28-30 May, proved once again a great success. Three dinghies and eight sailors enjoyed fast sailing around the white sands of Morar at Arisaig.

A second weekend has been programmed for the Glasgow Fair, 17-,19 June, at Loch Creran, Appin near Oban.(see inset). Some caravan accommodation has been booked and other members are camping at the same site. Space in the site may be limited but there are several other caravan parks nearby and bed and breakfast or hotel accommodation in Oban would not be too far away.

In the past the Creran weekend has been quite low key. There is sheltered sailing combined with plenty to do for the kids within easy reach. It may be possible to crew for one of the dinghies already going or you could take your own boat.

If this weekend interests you please contact Andrew Dean on "Glasgow". As time is getting on, the sooner the better.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Last year's Fun Day and Two Day Event were both well attended and vill be repeatcd this year.

The Fun Day is scheduled for the 29th August. As before novelty races will be held and barbeque food will be provided.

The Two Day Event will also be much as last vear .The date is to be announced. so watch the notice board. A regatta with separate prizes is programmed to run over both the Saturday and Sunday. A midnight sail is planned with other activities to include canoeing, sailboarding and games for the kids.

The Saturday night is to be livened up with some singing; so if you know a few chords bring your guitar.

PUBLICITY

In the on-going drive to recruit new members Neil McVicar has been appointed as the club's publicity man. He is arranging a poster campaign for local libraries. If you have any publicity suggestions or can display a poster please contact Neil.

TUESDAYS

Informal racing is held on Tuesdays from around 7pm. The barbecue will be lit; so bring a couple of beefburgers. If you cannot make it in time for a sail, why not come up later for the barbecue and a blether.

RACING

Three regattas have taken place and Andrew Riddell's Laser is leading the fleet so far but, as usual, the Mirrors are snapping at his heels and the competition is hotting up. Sailboards are welcome to join the races and it is worth noting that the only one to compete so far - Joe Swierczek on a D2S - took second place.

PERIMETER FENCE

During the last year the fence was damaged in one or two places. A grant was obtained to provide Hawthorn hedging for the ends of the compound and ditches were dug outside the plants. It is hoped that this will enhance both the security and appearance of the club.

RESCUE BOAT

The rescue boat is now equiped with a new 15 horsepower engine which can be relied upon to start when needed, This facility is provided for all members to use.

Ifyou cannot operate the motor ask one of the committee to show you:The oniy rules are that you use the boat safely and that you do not leave an empty fuel tank.

SAILBOARDING

Great response from the sailboarders to the MACH Demo day on Sunday 13th June. Thanks to. Andy Broom of MACH and Alastalr Matheson (jnr.) for bringing a good selection of boards and rigs. The wind let us down, but a few folk got the larger sails out on the water with Mistral and Bic boards. MACH had brought some great short boards.---- but maybe next time!
We hope to have a next time possibly in September with a "Phone to see if it's on" system.
